Split-Dalmatia County borders the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the north, Dubrovnik-Neretva County in the east, Šibenik-Knin County in the west and the territorial sea frontier of the Republic of Croatia in the south. It is administratively divided into 16 towns and 39 municipalities and covers an area of 14,100 km2, including 9,576 km2 of sea and 4,544 km2 of land. Because of its central position on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, the County has always had an extraordinary cultural and historical role. It consists of three varied and, in many aspects, specific parts: islands (74 islands and islets, 9 of which have a population of 37,620, and 69 reefs), the coastline (populated with 333,709 inhabitants) and the hinterland (populated with 103,050 inhabitants).
